At Afya House, Nairobi, where His Excellency Governor Francis Kimemia consulted with Cabinet Secretary for Health Services Hon. Mutahi Kagwe on strengthening Nyandarua’s health sector, including urgent upgrades for J.M Kariuki County Referral Hospital (Ol’Kalou Sub-County), Engineer County Hospital (Kinangop Sub-County) and Ndaragwa Health Center (Ndaragwa Sub-County).
Nyandarua, which is a national food basket, had the least investment in health pre-devolution compared to other counties in the former Central Province with one functional sub-district hospital, JM Kariuki Hospital.
Governor Kimemia said synergy between the Ministry of Health and the County Government will be critical in enhancing health services across Nyandarua.
Services earmarked for introduction include inpatient, dental, theatre, imaging diagnostics and new laboratory interventions currently unavailable at the identified facilities.
Hon. Kagwe, who last visited Nyandarua on June 15, 2020, committed to support the County in the upgrades so that it attains the national standard of 100,000 persons per Level IV Hospital.
Nyandarua is expected to have at least seven such facilities, including a Level V Referral Hospital for specialized services.
A joint team has been established to accelerate action on identified gaps within seven days.
Present were County Executive Committee Members Hon. Stephen Njoroge (acting County Secretary / Finance and Economic Development), Hon. Mary Mugwanja (Transport, Energy and Public Works) and Hon. (Dr.) John Mungai (Health Services), alongside Chief Officer for Health Services Ms. Florence Annan.
In attendance was Director of Healthcare Services at the Ministry of Health Dr. Laban Thiga, his counterpart at the Tax Exemption section Mr. Joel Gitonga and Co-operation Secretary at the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists’ Council, Mr. Michael Onyango.
