His Excellency Governor (Dr.) Moses Kiarie Badilisha has thanked the national government for its relief food support to Nyandarua County.
The first batch of the consignment was received and flagged off this afternoon by the Governor, the County Commissioner Mr. Amos Mariba, and legislators from the drought-stricken areas, among them Senator Hon. John Methu, County Woman Representative Hon. Faith Gitau and Ndaragwa MP Hon. George Gachagua.
Speaking during the short event in Olkalou, Governor Badilisha thanked the President, His Excellency (Dr.) William Ruto and his deputy, His Excellency Rigathi Gachagua, for heeding to the calls of Nyandarua leaders to intervene in mitigating the drought effects on the affected families.
“Nyandarua residents are not lazy. They are never proud of relief support. But we are now caught up in a very complex climate change phenomenon which has disrupted our rain and weather patterns. As a County, we are now budgeting and instituting strategies which address climate-smart agricultural practices, tackles the dependence on rain-fed agriculture and also affords our residents clean and certified seeds and farm inputs which improve on production,” the County Head noted.
Already, preparation of a supplementary budget which seeks to address short, mid and long-term strategies on agriculture and other productive sectors, is ongoing and will be tabled in the County Assembly soon. Some of the targeted interventions include desiltation of dams, construction of household water pans, and sinking of boreholes to help in providing water for domestic and irrigation use.
The relief support targets to reach 14,281 households across several most affected areas in the County. “Do not be quick to sell your little farm produce because already we are experiencing very depressed harvests,” the Governor advised.
Present were several Members of the County Assembly and other leaders
