Establishment of a cancer center in Nyandarua

This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on September 18, 2020 by His Excellency Governor Francis Kimemia with Chairperson of the Board of Directors for KUTRRH Prof. Olive Mugenda.

At today’s meeting, the Deputy Governor revealed that the County Government has already secured land for the facility, whose architectural designs are also ready.

An implementation committee is in place and funds have been mobilized, though more are still needed.

The Department of Health Services is currently following up on more than 800 cancer cases across Nyandarua and targeting a further 2,000.

On October 2, 2020, County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Hon. (Dr.) John Mungai received cervical cancer treatment equipment (Colposcopy) worth KShs. 2 million from the National Cancer Control Program at the JM Kariuki Memorial County Hospital.

The CT scan at the hospital is also operational.

The Deputy Governor asked KUTRH to fund selected Nyandarua nurses for specialized training as the County Government sponsors others through its own capacity-building program.

She further requested KUTRH to carry out medical camps across the County as part of sensitization against the cancer.

KUTRH’s Director of Training and Capacity-Building Prof. Wangari Mwai, who promised to continue supporting the County Government, invited devolved units to refer patients to the facility for PET scans and early cancer screening.

The team later assessed the proposed site for the cancer center.

Present were County Executive Committee Members Hon. (Dr.) Mungai and Hon. Milkah Wanjiru (Water, Environment, Tourism and Natural Resources), alongside Chief Officer for Lands, Housing and Physical Planning Mr. Nelson Kimilu, among other senior County Government officials.
