Nyandarua Governor H.E Daniel Waithaka Mwangi speaks to journalists from his Ol’Kalou town office where he explained the status of the on-going installation of fibre optic cables in the county. He criticised ICT National Cabinet Secretary Hon. Joe Mucheru for misleading the country by stating that Nyandarua County was opposed to the installation of the cables, contrary to what was on the ground.
The Governor showed journalists trenches dug by an international firm from Nyahururu to Ol’Kalou showing that the exercise was on-going. The Governor was accompanied by ag Executive in charge of Communication, ICT and Inter-Governmental Relations Hon. Nderi Ndiani and the Chief Officer, Eng. Wilson Kigwa.
Nyandarua County Government is deeply disappointed over remarks attributed to ICT Cabinet Secretary Hon. Joe Mucheru claiming it was among three counties that have refused to allow for the installation of Fibre Optic cable in their areas.
According to the CS, Nyandarua alongside Kajiado and Kwale Counties “will be left behind in technology” for refusing to allow the cables to pass through their territories.
Contrary, to the said assertions which are out rightly malicious, Nyandarua County allowed the laying of the cable without charging a single coin for the way leave in recognition of the pivotal role the cable will play in the realization of the key jubilee government projects including connecting the whole county to the internet.
The assertions are unfortunately calculated to project the county as technologically lethargic and unwilling to embrace technology. Let it be known that as a county we fully appreciate the impact the fibre optic project will have on the economic, social and technological fronts.
It’s unfortunate that there were no consultation with the ICT department regarding the said matter. We urge the national ministry of ICT to foster stronger consultations and partnership with our county for the smooth implementation of the next phase.
As you are aware, the county Government of Nyandarua sits on rented premises and as such it would not be reasonable or prudent to connect the said premises. However, we are and have always been willing to have our new offices together with those of the county Assembly connected to the National fibre optic backbone. Let it also be known that contrary to the assertions that the county is opposed to being connected to IFMIS, the county has fully embraced the system and no single financial transaction is done outside the IFMIS system.
The completion of fibre Optic project, will enable the County to have more reliable, stable and efficient network that will be used by the government in the delivery of services. In this regard, the Nyandarua county Government through the ICT department has collaborated with Huawei technologies, and fibre backbone duct has already been lay down up to Ol-Kalou town.
With that said, rest assured that Nyandarua County fully embraces technology and it’s evident by the completion of the fibre backbone duct that terminates at its headquarters.
