Nyandarua County Government has introduced new potato seed varieties that will be distributed to selected farmers’ groups for multiplication. The seed varieties are;
1. Rudolf- a red high yielding table variety, mid-season variety with some resistance to blight and Yntn virus;
2. Markies- a yellow high yielding with high dry matter content good for chips and crisps. It is late maturing variety.
3. Destiny- Yellow variety of high dry matter that is good for processing with high resistance to nematodes and is an earlu variety.
4.Toluca- a yellow early maturing table variety of high yield with good resistance to late blight.
The Governor H.E Danile Waithaka Mwangi flagged off the first consignment of 50 tons outside his Ol’kalou office that will be distributed to selected farmers’ groups for multiplication. A list of beneficiaries from all the five sub-counties of Ndaragwa, Ol’joro-Orok, Ol’Kalou, Kipipiri and Kinangop, was issued by the department of Agriculture. More seeds have been distributed to ATC farms in Kinangop and Ol’joro-Orok for multiplication before they are distributed to farmers.
The Governor said his administration will continue to improve seed varieties to enable farmers post high profits. He said the government was doing everything possible to ensure the new law on packaging potatoes in 50 kg bags is implemented despite efforts by some brokers who have filed a case in court challenging the law.
